Ismael Bennacer’s injury troubles have resurfaced at Dinamo Zagreb, casting fresh doubt over the midfielder’s future and potentially complicating Milan’s summer transfer plans.
The Algerian international, who joined the Croatian side on loan in search of regular playing time, was forced off after just 23 minutes during Dinamo’s match away to Osijek on January 25.
Medical tests later confirmed a muscle strain in his thigh, an issue expected to sideline him for several weeks, via MilanNews.
The setback comes at a difficult moment. Bennacer had been enjoying a positive spell, making 12 appearances and contributing three goals involvement (one goal and two assists).
His fitness will now also be monitored ahead of Dinamo’s upcoming Europa League play-off ties against Genk, with uncertainty over whether he can be included in their UEFA squad list.
The injury could have financial consequences for Milan. Bennacer’s move to Zagreb includes an option to buy worth €10 million.
Until recently, Dinamo had appeared inclined to trigger the clause, but the latest problem may prompt a more cautious evaluation.
For the Rossoneri, that potential fee is significant as they look to fund reinforcements in the summer.
If Dinamo decide against a permanent deal, Bennacer would return to San Siro with ongoing fitness concerns and a sizeable salary, leaving the Rossoneri with a difficult decision to make over his long-term future.
