Riccardo Calafiori believes Italy cannot afford to miss another World Cup as he continues to adapt to a new tactical role under Gennaro Gattuso ahead of the qualifier against Estonia.
Speaking to Sky Sport, with quotes via TMW, the Arsenal defender discussed how his position has evolved since joining the Azzurri setup, admitting he is thriving in his current responsibilities. “In theory I’m a full-back,” he said, “but right now I’m really enjoying myself. When I have freedom, with awareness, I can give my best and help the team.”
Calafiori praised the intensity of Gattuso’s training sessions, revealing the new group is building a strong identity. “We’re working well, with great intensity, and I have to say I didn’t expect it,” he noted.
“Hopefully this will help us a lot, because at international level every team is tough in that sense. Compared to the match against Israel, we need to recognise dangerous situations a bit more – and that includes me.”
Looking ahead to the rest of Italy’s qualification campaign, Calafiori underlined the importance of restoring national pride. “Because we’re Italy,” he said firmly.
“I just can’t see Italy missing a World Cup. It hurt the last two times we failed, and we’ll do everything possible to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
The 23-year-old has quickly become one of Gattuso’s key players since breaking into the starting XI, offering versatility both as a centre-back and in wider roles.
