Ancelotti not surprised by Modric at Milan, ‘others might follow’ Conte’s path

Carlo Ancelotti feels Antonio Conte was right to take some days off and is not surprised by Luka Modric’s impact at Milan: ‘Last season, he was the only Real Madrid player who didn’t miss a single training session.’

Ancelotti didn’t only talk, Italy, Brazil and the 2026 World Cup during his latest interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, but also commented on the Serie A campaign. Currently, Roma and Inter are the table leaders in Italy’s top flight.

“It’s a beautiful and balanced [season], with Roma on top, which is a surprise,” Ancelotti said.

“They have Wesley, and here on my staff, there’s Juan, a former Roma player. We talk a lot about Roma. I’m happy to see them up there.

“Milan are doing well, making the most of not playing in Europe and Allegri’s pragmatism,” continued Ancelotti.

“Max has simplified things; others try to complicate them. It’s not that hard.”

Milan are just two points below the leading pair, and their summer signing Modric has started in all 11 league games so far.

“I’m pleased his maintaining such a high level, and it doesn’t surprise me at all,” Ancelotti said.

“I knew he’d do well because he has the World Cup as a goal. He plays once a week, and last year in Madrid, he was the only player who didn’t miss a single training session.”

Ancelotti said Modric can keep a high-level performance because of “genetics and professionalism” and remains “one of the best midfielders around.”

“I read they’re talking about another year of contract; he can easily do that,” he added.

Serie A will resume next week with a big derby della Madonnina between Inter and Milan.

“I expect a tight game. Inter are the most ‘European’ team we have,” said Ancelotti.

“They’re doing great in the Champions League, winning all their matches, and they’re coming off two finals in three years. They maintain their level with great consistency. Marotta is surely a capable executive. He’s done a great job.”

The Italian tactician believes the Nerazzurri and Napoli remain the favourites to win the title this term.

“They have had a few too many losses, but are still there. Then Roma, Milan and Juventus. They’ll all fight until the end.”

Conte will be absent from Napoli training sessions until November 17, and Ancelotti believes his compatriot was right in taking some days off.

“He did well. Coaches are under huge pressure. Our job is very complicated, and sometimes you just need to disconnect,” said the Brazil coach.

“A coach never really disconnects, even when he has only a few players. He’s always there, but rest is essential. I think Conte has opened a path others might follow.”

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
