Liverpool in talks over loan move for “top-level talent”

Liverpool are a shadow of themselves from their Premier League title-winning campaign, and pressure is mounting to turn things around.

The Reds have massively underperformed in the first half of the season, though they currently sit fourth in the Premier League table ahead of their clash with Arsenal on Thursday evening.

Arne Slot has overseen significant changes to his title-winning squad, with a summer recruitment drive amounting to a whopping £450m investment in reinforcements, most of which was spent on bolstering the attacking threat.

Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak were brought in to boost goal contributions in the final third, easing some of the pressure on Egyptian talisman Mohamed Salah, but it has not gone to plan so far.

Indeed, Ekitike has been a consistent threat in the matches he has featured in, but his positional competitor Isak has yet to live up to his £130m price tag.

Not only that, Salah has struggled to maintain his own high standards, with just four league goals this season, leaving him behind both Ekitike and Cody Gakpo.

Liverpool are grappling with a multitude of issues, ranging from fitness concerns to poorly executed performances at both ends of the pitch, and it remains unclear whether they will look to add further reinforcements during the January transfer window.

In fact, a new report has suggested they may be plotting the opposite, with reports in Italy claiming the club are in talks to offload another forward for the second half of the campaign.

According to Gazzetta, initial discussions have begun for Liverpool talent Federico Chiesa to rejoin Juventus on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Italian publication claims that after learning the player is open to a return to Serie A, Juve have decided to test Liverpool’s resolve over a potential deal this January.

It is believed Liverpool may be more willing to negotiate towards the end of the window, once they have clarity on Salah’s return from AFCON and Isak’s ongoing injury situation.

However, there is also a suggestion that a move back to Juventus could appeal to Chiesa as he looks to secure his place at the World Cup this summer.

There is no doubt that Chiesa’s time at Liverpool has drawn mixed reviews, but the club’s supporters have taken a real shine to the Italian forward.

Slot’s lack of inclusion for the 26-year-old – once hailed a “top-level talent” by commentator Lucy Ward – has frequently been met with criticism, particularly during the spell in which the team suffered eight defeats in 11 fixtures towards the end of last year.

The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce weighed in on these reports on X, after Gazzetta’s claim last night:

“Liverpool have had no contact, either formal or informal, from Juventus regarding Federico Chiesa.”

“The Italian forward regarded as an important member of the squad – has featured in last five matches.”

Despite Pearce’s rebuttal, it would certainly not surprise supporters if Slot were to sanction a move away for the winger should the opportunity arise, given his preference to leave him on the bench in most instances.

From Chiesa’s perspective, a departure from Anfield would likely be beneficial not only for his World Cup ambitions, but also for the long-term trajectory of his career through increased game time.

With that in mind, Chiesa’s future at Liverpool will be one to watch in the coming weeks and whether the stance on his future will change towards the end of the window.
