Cagliari came back from the Nikola Vlasic goal to secure their first away win of the season with Matteo Prati and a sensational Semih Kilicsoy slalom ending the Torino streak.
Toro were on fine form after back-to-back victories over Cremonese and Sassuolo, but Adam Masina and Saul Coco were on international duty, with long-term absentees Perr Schuurs and Zanos Savva. The Sardinians were decimated, with Zito Luvumbo and Joseph Liteta at AFCON, Yerry Mina and Juan Rodriguez suffering from flu symptoms, Ze Pedro, Michael Folorunsho, Mattia Felici and Andrea Belotti injured.
See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.
Alberto Paleari rushed off his line and brought down Riyad Idrissi inside the penalty area after eight minutes, but the Cagliari man was flagged offside. When VAR confirmed he was not offside, Paleari was saved by getting his hand to the ball just before crashing into the player, so there was no spot-kick.
The Sardinians threatened again with Idrissi’s back-heel flick sending Gianluca Gaetano clear, his angled drive just about smothered at the near post by Paleari.
Instead, Torino took the lead with their first genuine scoring opportunity. Elia Caprile did very well to rush off his line and block Giovanni Simeone clear on goal, but the striker had support from Che Adams who smartly rolled the loose ball across for on-rushing Nikola Vlasic to fire into the top corner. It was Vlasic’s fifth goal in the last six Serie A games.
Cagliari equalised on the stroke of half-time when a Gianluca Gaetano corner was flicked on by Luca Mazzitelli for Matteo Prati to prod over the line from six yards.
Semih Kilicsoy shinned the finish from just inside the area on Gaetano’s assist, but he made up for it with a sensational individual goal.
The Turkish talent gathered inside his own half, dribbled past three, cut inside a fourth and bent the finish into the far bottom corner with the inside of the left foot from the edge of the area.
Caprile pushed away the Adrian Ismajli header, then had his gloves stung by a Gvidas Gineitis screamer, while Emirhan Ilkhan fired straight at him after winning it back in midfield.
Simeone didn’t get enough power on the header at the near post from Niels Nkounkou’s cross, while Caprile fingertipped a Duvan Zapata header over the bar.
Toro did have the ball in the net in stoppages with a splendid Cyril Ngonge volley, but it didn’t count because Aboukhlal had already dragged it out of play before the cross.
Vlasic 28 (T), Prati 45 (C), Kilicsoy 66 (C)
