Milan banking on Füllkrug effect after scoring just one header so far

Niclas Füllkrug will soon be announced by AC Milan, having completed his medical tests, and the Rossoneri are hoping for aerial contributions from the German.

It’s no secret that Milan have struggled to get their strikers going this season, having to rely on the wingers Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic up front instead. While the duo have done well, it’s clear that the Rossoneri are lacking a proper target man.

The signing of Füllkrug, as such, will hopefully fill that gap in the squad. He completed his medical tests for the club on Tuesday this week and the announcement is imminent, arriving on a six-month loan with an option to buy.

Taking a look at Milan’s goalscoring stats this season, despite finding the back of the net 24 times (second-most goals in the league), they have only scored one header (!). This came on matchday 2, when Luka Modric found Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the box.

Another header can be found if we extend the discussion to Coppa Italia, as Rafael Leao scored one against Bari in the preliminaries. Then again, two is nowhere near enough, especially when you consider that Milan have some strong players on the crossing front.

With Füllkrug up front, Allegri will hopefully have another type of weapon. In the 2023-24 season, when he found the back of the net 16 times for Borussia Dortmund, four of the goals were headers. Two of his three goals for West Ham were also headers.

The only thing I’m “banking” on Fullkrug is that he’ll be an Origi-like bust.

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
