Tottenham Hotspur could be well placed to take advantage of a fractured dressing room as tensions at a big European club open up the possibility of a marquee signing.
The Lilywhites may well be on the lookout for inspiration in the transfer market, having struggled to assert themselves under Thomas Frank this term, with Spurs in 11th ahead of a crunch clash with champions Liverpool.
So as the January window approaches, it would not be surprising if the club were on the lookout for solutions.
And if a recent report is to be believed, an opportunity on the continent may have presented itself, with an international player’s behaviour suggesting he could be on the move.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Premier League has been mentioned as the ‘most realistic’ landing spot for the apparently unsettled Bayern Munich midfielder, Leon Goretzka.
Goretzka recently reacted angrily to being substituted for the Bavarians during their draw against Mainz, in which they were rescued by a late Harry Kane penalty.
It has been suggested that the German midfielder’s reaction has created a negative atmosphere at the Allianz Arena, to the point that the 30-year-old could be seeking a way out before too long.
Fichajes claims that a move to the Premier League is most likely given that Bayern would be keen to receive a decent sum for Goretzka, who is on wages of €250,000 (£219,000) a week, as per Capology.
Spurs may be one of the ‘best-positioned’ teams to offer this, with the north Londoners said to value his quality and experience – though they may encounter competition from Nottingham Forest and West Ham, who were also thought to be considering a move.
It is unclear how strong or tenuous these links are, but if there is indeed enough tension, you wouldn’t blame Vincent Kompany for wanting to shift even a talent like Goretzka as his side chase Bundesliga and Champions League crowns.
With Spurs suffering from midfield injuries at present, a January deal of this calibre would almost certainly be of interest, though even if they were made to wait for the summer, it would still be a coup to bring the six-time Bundesliga champion to N17.
In any case, Tottenham would be in line for a bargain, with Goretzka’s deal running out in the summer and the German available on a free transfer as of July.
