Lautaro Martinez responds to Inter criticism: ‘Let them talk’

Lautaro Martinez insists he will ‘let others talk’ after replying to critics with a brace to beat Pisa, while Francesco Pio Esposito notes ‘Inter always comes first.’

The pressure was on the Nerazzurri after back-to-back defeats against AC Milan in Serie A and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

This was also no easy task, as Pisa were unbeaten in six and had kept four consecutive clean sheets on home turf.

It took until the 69th minute to finally break the deadlock with Lautaro Martinez on a Pio Esposito assist, then he added a second by redirecting the Nicolò Barella strike at the back post.

“The team comes first, so whether I provide a goal or assist, the important thing is that Inter get the three points,” Esposito told DAZN Italia.

“A goal means joy for a striker, but I am convinced the team comes first, as Lauti always says.”

While Lautaro Martinez had scored a brace in the Champions League this season, it was his first in Serie A.

There had been some controversy over his recent form and early substitutions, which Cristian Chivu explained today was because the Argentine had been struggling with flu symptoms since before the derby.

“I am used to criticism,” Lautaro Martinez told DAZN Italia.

“I work for myself, for Inter, and for my family, so I let those outside that group talk all they want. I am happy for the team, for my family, and for myself. I work for Inter and that’s all.”

He is the captain and the club symbol, so how does he see his future at Inter?

“I hope for a long time, I have many years on my contract and people love me here. The team comes first of all, Inter must win, we’ve been challenging for every trophy for many years now. People outside can talk, but we must focus on lifting Inter as high as possible.”

Will he reward Esposito with a dinner for that assist?

“Of course. My teammates joke around and say I don’t offer dinner, but we’ve got such packed schedules, as soon as there’s time, I will organise one of my barbecues, as always.”
