Andre Ayew backs grand return of Milo U-13 Champions League after six-year break

The Milo U-13 Champions League is set to return in December after a six-year absence, marking a significant revival of one of Ghanas most recognisable youth football initiatives.

The competition was halted during the COVID period, but organisers say the new edition will introduce a refreshed structure and wider pathways for emerging players.

The relaunch took place at Nestl Ghanas headquarters in Accra on Friday, drawing senior figures from sports administration and football development.

A new logo and an updated trophy were unveiled. The trophy was donated by Abedi Pele from his personal collection, underscoring his long-standing connection to youth football.

His son, Andre Ayew, presented it to guests. Ayew, Ghanas most capped international, joins the programme as an ambassador.

He said he hopes the tournament will help identify future national team players. He also stressed the need to guide young athletes.

Others came and did their part, so we need to also open the door for them, he said.

Nestl Ghanas Managing Director, Salome Azevedo, urged participants to balance football with academics.

Remember, football is a wonderful complement to your education, she said.

There were virtual messages from Stephen Appiah, another ambassador, and Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams.

Both highlighted the value of structured youth competitions in strengthening the national pipeline.

Representatives of the Sports Ministry, the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Football Association also attended, signalling institutional support for the project.

Organisers say the tournament is designed to offer more playing time and broader scouting opportunities.

All 16 regions will be represented in the national finals. The event will take place from December 3 to 6 at Paa Joe Park in Kumasi.

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. Continental stakes raise the intensity, where away goals no longer apply but margins still feel razor thin. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
