Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso says he called his predecessor, Luciano Spalletti, after he was appointed as the Juventus boss: ‘I wanted to wish him good luck.’
Gattuso held a press conference on Monday on the first day of Italy’s preparations for World Cup qualifying games against Moldova and Norway. Football Italia was among the accredited media at Coverciano today.
Spalletti was appointed as the new Juventus coach two weeks ago, and Gattuso revealed he had spoken to his predecessor after his appointment at the Allianz Stadium.
“I spoke to Spalletti, I congratulated him,” Gattuso said.
“He asked me if I needed anything, but I just called him to wish him good luck.”
Gattuso had replaced Spalletti as the Italy head coach in June and already visited Juventus at the beginning of the season, when Igor Tudor was in charge.
A former Napoli boss, Gattuso, was also asked his thoughts on the recent poor results of the defending champions, as well as Antonio Conte’s complaints.
“Napoli have a great coach, who has won a lot and knows how to move,” said Gattuso.
“I’ve worked for 19 months in Naples, and it’s never easy to confirm yourself after winning. I think Antonio has the strength to react to this negative moment. I mean, negative…if you look at the table, they are all there.”
During his press conference, Gattuso revealed that Federico Chiesa had decided against playing for the Azzurri during the November break.
