Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday may have come at a heavy cost, as manager Rúben Amorim expressed serious concern over a potential long-term injury to Benjamin Sesko.
The Slovenian forward, who joined United in the summer for £74 million from RB Leipzig, was forced off late in the match after appearing to jar his knee in a challenge with Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.
Sesko, who came off the bench in the 58th minute, was substituted in the closing stages after visibly struggling to continue.
Although he managed to walk off the pitch without assistance, Amorim’s post-match comments suggested that the issue could be more severe than initially hoped.
“We have to check,” Amorim told reporters, as reported on the official Man United website.
“He has something in his knee, so let’s see. We think he has a problem.”
When pressed for further details, the Portuguese manager admitted that it was too early to make a definitive judgment but conceded that the injury could keep Sesko sidelined for some time.
“It’s the knee, and we never know,” Amorim continued.
“Right now, I’m not thinking about form or selection. I’m more concerned about the injury because it’s in the knee, and I don’t know how serious it is.”
Sesko’s potential absence would be a major blow for Man United, who have already been dealing with several injury concerns this season.
The 21-year-old striker had been gradually working his way into Amorim’s plans but the former Bundesliga star has still not been able to settle in England and come to terms with Amorim’s playing style.
His form has been disrupted by inconsistency and now, possibly, by injury.
Initial assessments from United’s medical staff indicate that Sesko will undergo a scan in the next 24 hours to determine the extent of the damage.
The timing of the setback is particularly worrying, as United are about to enter a packed fixture schedule.
If scans confirm a serious injury, United may have to reassess their January transfer plans to ensure sufficient depth in attack.
