Frederick Acheampong defends Asante Kotoko after heavy CAF Confederation Cup defeat to Wydad AC

Frederick AcheampongGFA Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong has come to the defence of Asante Kotoko following their exit from the 2025 CAF Confederation Cup.Kotoko were comprehensively beaten 6-1 on aggregate by Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, prompting criticism from sections of the public who described the result as embarrassing for Ghanaian club football.Speaking on Kessben FM, Acheampong, popularly known as Achie, said the defeat must be viewed in context, insisting that Wydads superior infrastructure and resources make such outcomes inevitable.When clubs in Morocco participate in Africa, they are given $800,000 for the Champions League and $500,000 for the Confederation Cup to support them, he explained.If Kotoko had $500,000, imagine what they could do with capacity and recruitment.He argued that Wydads state-backed funding gives them a massive edge in player acquisition, technical preparation, and general operations, while Kotoko continues to battle financial constraints.There are surprises in football, but realistically, how do you expect Kotoko to beat WAC? Maybe only through spiritual incantations, Acheampong remarked, stressing the gap in technical support and sports science between the two clubs.
