Vieira in danger despite Genoa reassurances after weak transfer strategy

Genoa are bottom of the Serie A table and still without a victory, so for all the reassurances from President Dan Sucu, it’s safe to say Patrick Vieira’s job remains in the balance.

The performances were at times convincing, but never bringing home the full points, and ultimately that is what really matters when it comes to keeping a coach in place.

Words from the club are reassuring and insist Vieira is not in danger, but the next two games before the break for international duty, away to Sassuolo and at home with Fiorentina, will make the difference.

Perhaps the decision could already be made before Fiorentina, as Monday’s match in Reggio Emilia will have a big say in what happens next.

The sense of disappointment in Genoa is immense, but not to give alibis to Vieira or justify the total collapse, it is no secret that the transfer strategy was insufficient, and the squad has gaps in every area.

Genoa decided not to buy Andrea Pinamonti so that they could focus on Lorenzo Colombo, who has so far made little impact.

The focus on the attack is the most disconcerting part of the team, because if you don’t have a specialist upfront (and Vitinha is not exactly a guarantee of prolific goalscoring either), then it becomes difficult to survive.

Vieira accepted the challenge, he knows full well the reassurances are false, and if the trend doesn’t change soon, he’ll be the one paying for all this.
