Liverpool are considering a move for Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano. The France international becomes the latest addition to a growing Liverpool short list, with the Reds reportedly resigned to lose out on top target Marc Guehi.
After failing in a deadline day move for Guehi, Liverpool remain keen but are no longer considered the frontrunners. Foreign teams hold the advantage in the race for the soon-to-be free agent Crystal Palace skipper, as they will be allowed to approach the player as early as January.
Liverpool have now continued their search for alternatives, and The Mirror has reported that Upamecano is a name highly appreciated at Anfield. The Bayern Munich man also looks set for free agency, as contract extension talks continue to stall.
The player and club are at odds at the moment, with Upamecano reportedly seeking massively improved terms in his fresh deal. Liverpool are now on high alert to the situation, as they seek cover for preferred pairing Virgil Van Djik and Ibrahima Konate.
The latter continues to be linked with a free transfer to Real Madrid, as he too looks destined for free agency.
The futures of all three men (Upamecano, Guehi, Konate) could yet be intertwined, with one free agency decision likely affecting the others. A Konate departure from Liverpool could accelerate the Reds’ pursuit of Guehi and/or Upamecano, while Bayern Munich are reportedly tracking Guehi as an alternative if they lose Upamecano.
Bayern Munich are also reportedly interested in another Liverpool target – Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck. Schlotterbeck is believed to be an alternative option for both Liverpool and Bayern should either club fail in their pursuit of Upamecano and Guehi.
Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande is the other name believed to make up Liverpool’s short list. The Reds’ pursuit of defensive reinforcements is also hastened by the loss of summer signing Giovanni Leoni through injury.
The young Italian was signed this summer to provide long term defensive cover, but suffered an ACL injury that will see him miss a large part of the season.
