Lautaro Martinez beats Maradona record with brace in 6-0 Argentina win

Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has now overtaken Diego Maradona and drawn level with Hernan Crespo in Argentina’s all-time top goalscorer charts after his brace during his nation’s 6-0 win over Puerto Rico in the early hours of Wednesday morning. 

El Toro started among the substitutes, but emerged off the bench to score twice in the second half as Argentina picked up a 6-0 friendly victory over Puerto Rico in Miami. 

Lautaro now has 35 international goals from 74 caps to his name, which puts him joint-fourth in Argentina’s all-time top goalscorer charts. 

With his brace against Puerto Rico, Lautaro both overtook Maradona (34 goals), and drew level with Crespo (35 goals). Sergio Aguero is the next target on the list (41 goals), but there is still some way to go to catch Gabriel Batistuta (56 goals) and even more so for Lionel Messi (114 goals). 

Next up for Lautaro is the long journey back from the United States to Italy. According to reports from Calciomercato, the Nerazzurri skipper will not be back in training under Cristian Chivu before Thursday. 

That means that he will have a maximum of two training sessions before Inter’s upcoming Serie A test against the table-topping Roma on Sunday. However, with Marcus Thuram unlikely to feature, there is a high chance that Lautaro starts alongside either Ange-Yoan Bonny or Francesco Pio Esposito.
