Concerns over the health of Alejandro Grimaldo overshadowed Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 victory over 1.FC Union Berlin this afternoon.
The Spaniard was involved in a nasty collision with his own teammate Christian Kofane in the penalty area shortly before half-time.
Bleeding from the head, the 30-year-old had to be stretchered off the BayArena pitch in a daze by the club’s medical staff and paramedics.
“He was knocked out for a short time and has a wound on his head that’s now being stitched,” Leverkusen’s licensing director, Thomas Eichin, told Sky.
Grimaldo has since thanked concerned fans via Instagram and that the incident was “nothing serious” as he prepares to “focus on what’s ahead with the [Spanish] national team”.
Elsewhere, there was some positive news for Kasper Hjulmand’s side as Jeanuël Belocian made his long awaited return from an ACL tear last January.
