Freiburg picked up three points on opening night of the 2025/26 Europa League, after Julian Schuster’s men defeated Basel at Europa-Park Stadion.
Midfield duo Patrick Osterhage and Maximilian Eggestein were both on the scoresheet in the 2-1 win, and they are now looking for a second European win in a row as they travel to Emilia Romagna to face Bologna.
Schuster’s side drew 1-1 with fellow Badeners Hoffenheim at the weekend, with Lukas Kübler’s opener being cancelled out in the first half by Fisnik Asllani.
Johan Manzambi will return to the squad for European football despite still serving a suspension in the Bundesliga, while it remains to be seen whether Phillip Lienhart will be fit enough to partner Matthias Ginter at the back after a period on the sidelines.
Bolonga will be without Ciro Immobile and Ibrahim Sulemana, who are both ruled out through injury, while veteran right-back Lorenzo De Silvestri was omitted from the club’s Europa League squad.
The hosts have also welcomed back Nicolo Casale, who resumed full training this week.
Bologna – 4-2-3-1: Skorupski – Holm, Beukema, Lucumi, Miranda – Pogeba, Freuler – Orsolini, Ferguson, Dominguez – Castro
