Union and Hamburg play out tense stalemate in Köpenick

Hamburg began the evening confidently, enjoying early possession and forcing the game’s first corner. Yet their bright start was abruptly interrupted when Union were awarded a penalty in the ninth minute. After a loose ball fell to Diogo Leite on the edge of the box, the defender skipped past Rayan Philippe and was pulled down, leaving the referee little choice.

However, Andrej Ilic’s penalty lacked conviction; his shot aimed at a comfortable height for Daniel Heuer Fernandes, who produced a brilliant save low to his left to keep the score level. It was a let-off for Hamburg, and Union’s supporters showed their frustration as their team sat off, allowing the visitors to build through midfield.

Philippe, who conceded the spot-kick, was also Hamburg’s most dangerous player in the first half. His speculative 25-yard strike tested Frederik Rønnow, but the Union keeper held firm. Despite regularly reaching promising positions in the final third, HSV struggled to create clear opportunities, with Fabio Vieira unusually quiet.

Union should have broken the deadlock five minutes before the interval. A well-worked low corner from Christopher Trimmel found Ilias Ansah in space, but the midfielder leaned back and blazed his finish over the bar.

After the restart, Jean-Luc Dompé registered the first meaningful effort of the second half with a dipping strike from distance that forced Rønnow into action. Play was briefly halted shortly after the hour due to a spectacular pyro display from the home fans, which lit up the night sky and delayed proceedings.

Hamburg continued to look threatening on the break, and in the 72nd minute, Ransford Königsdörffer came within inches of opening the scoring with a sharp right-footed effort that whistled narrowly past the far post.

Union responded through their captain. Trimmel’s inswinging corner struck the upright, and the rebound fell kindly for András Schäfer on the edge of the box, but his rushed effort sailed over the bar.
