Oppie and Vasilj praise Leverkusen's quality: "It what decided the game today"

Despite yet another spirited performance, St. Pauli came up just short at home against A Bayer Leverkusen side who ran out 2-1 winners at the Millerntor-Stadion.

Wing-back Louis Oppie tried to look at the positives for the Kiezkickers, but ultimately the defeat cut deep – a second Bundesliga loss in consecutive weekends is tough to take.

“We put in a good performance and had good intensity in the tackles. We’re gutted to lose. We managed to recover well from going a goal down.

“Obviously not nice when you don’t take chances after that. We were much better on the ball than we were against Stuttgart. That’s one positive we can take from today,” he said.

The Hanseatic club’s Bosnian goalkeeper Nikolas Vasilj wasn’t quite able to reproduce heroics between the posts, however he felt there were positives to take from the game.

“We showed a reaction to the Stuttgart game. We moved the ball around well from the opening minute. We were aggressive in the tackle and our gegenpressing was good.

“Leverkusen had hardly any chances and scored two goals. That says a lot about the quality they have and it’s what decided the game today.

Quick take: Big picture: the update fits broader trends across the league with schedule pressure and tight tables. Supporters will watch for clarity from training ground reports and official briefings. We’ll keep an eye on confirmed details as the story develops from official sources.
