Arsenal is interested in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka. The Germany international is out of contract next summer and was heavily linked with a move in the January window.
Arsenal’s fierce rivals Tottenham were also keen on the player who is understood to fancy a move to the Premier League. Goretzka opted against making a switch in January but is expected to leave Bayern as a free agent in the summer.
Christian Falk of CFBayern Insider reported that Arsenal were “seriously interested” in late January move for Goretzka, but the player had already informed Bayern of his desire to stay. Arsenal are reeling from the loss of Mikel Merino and were searching for a late replacement.
Falk adds that there is a strong chance the player would jump at the chance to join Arsenal should Mikel Arteta’s men make an approach over the summer.
Six time Bundesliga winner Goretzka would bring experience to Arsenal. Goretzka joined Bayern from Schalke in 2018 and has gone on to make 198 Bundesliga appearances for the club.
He has also won one Champions League title, two DFB-Pokal cups, three DFL Supercups, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Bayern. He became a full German international in 2014 and has played 67 times for his country.
The 30-year-old reportedly believes his style of play is perfectly suited for the Premier League. Goretzka is an all action box-to-box midfielder who possesses pace and strength.
He excels at breaking up the play as well as driving the ball forward. Arsenal are buoyed by their first appearance to a cup final in six years after defeating Chelsea in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final tie on Tuesday.
Talks of a historic quadruple are beginning to make their rounds and the Gunners are now well placed to achieve one of the four.
