Chelsea’s January transfer window has been unusually subdued.
After an expensive and aggressive summer, the Blues went through most of the month without adding a single new face, despite expectations that Liam Rosenior would look to reshape parts of his squad.
Deadline Day itself looked set to pass quietly too, especially after Chelsea missed out on Rennes defender Jérémy Jacquet, who instead opted for a move to Liverpool.
However, late activity has finally arrived — not an arrival, but Chelsea’s first confirmed deal of the day.
Chelsea have finalised an agreement to send David Datro Fofana on loan to sister club RC Strasbourg for the remainder of the 2025–26 season.
The Ivory Coast striker was recalled earlier this month following a productive spell in Turkey with Fatih Karagümrük, where he scored eight goals and rebuilt some momentum after a frustrating period in west London. Chelsea explored permanent exit options before the deadline, but no suitable deal materialised.
Despite drawing interest from several clubs across Europe — including Celtic, Derby County, another Ligue 1 side and Mallorca — the Blues were unable to secure a sale for the 23-year-old, who was once described as “aggressive” by former manager Vincent Kompany.
Instead, Chelsea opted for a temporary solution, agreeing a loan move to Strasbourg, who are seeking attacking reinforcements after Emmanuel Emegha suffered a recent injury setback.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal, posting: “David Datro Fofana to RC Strasbourg, here we go! Deal done with documents approved. Despite interest from another French club and Mallorca, Datro Fofana leaves Chelsea on loan to join Strasbourg immediately. Key to help cover Emegha’s absence for next weeks.”
It’s another short-term move for a player who has never truly been handed a sustained opportunity at Stamford Bridge. While Fofana’s Chelsea future remains uncertain, this loan gives him a fresh chance to impress in Ligue 1 — and perhaps finally prove he deserves a proper run at the highest level.
Over the years, he's had the pleasure of interviewing some of the biggest names in world sport, including Usain Bolt, Rafael Nadal, Christian Pulisic, and more.
