Chelsea are reportedly preparing an €80m (£69m) offer for one of Barcelona’s top players, with just days for new boss Liam Rosenior to make a statement in the January transfer window.
The Blues have been uncharacteristically quiet over the last few weeks, which isn’t particularly surprising given the amount of backroom upheaval at Stamford Bridge, with Enzo Maresca sent packing and Rosenior drafted in from Strasbourg.
But with the Blues’ underperformance proving to be Maresca’s undoing, and with plenty of cash always readily available in the BlueCo era, you wouldn’t put it past the west Londoners to have a late say as the window draws to a close.
With that in mind, they have recently been linked with an attacking arrival they are ready to bid big for.
According to Fichajes, Chelsea and Liam Rosenior are strong admirers of Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.
Aside from being highly thought of at Stamford Bridge, the key to luring the Spaniard from Camp Nou is thought to be an offer of a starting role that outranks his current status at Barcelona.
While Torres has started the majority of matches for Barca this term, there is a sense that Barcelona will seek a new centre-forward in the summer, leaving him to directly battle Robert Lewandowski for game time.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are fully aware of Barcelona’s financial position, and their reported ‘offer’ of €80m would be ‘practically impossible to refuse’, says Fichajes.
Although he had a night to forget at Stamford Bridge earlier in the campaign – when he was substituted at half-time – Torres has shone for the La Liga leaders, notching 11 times in the league ahead of their weekend trip to Elche.
And while Joao Pedro is starting to hit form for the Blues, there’s no doubting that being able to ‘seduce’ Torres would substantially bolster their attacking force, not least given the 25-year-old’s Premier League-winning experience at Manchester City.
Convincing Torres to head up the Chelsea strikeforce, instead of fighting for a place at Barcelona that he is well capable of winning, is sure to be the challenge for the hierarchy if they are to strike a deal, whether that be in the summer or the next few days.
It should therefore be music to the ears of those in SW6 that Torres is said to look favourably on a Premier League switch, where the two-time La Liga winner and Euro 2024 champion may consider himself to have unfinished business.
As ever with these kinds of reports, it’s easy to get carried away, and taking them with a pinch of salt is always advised. But if there are legs to this story, there is every reason for Chelsea supporters to be excited.
