Tottenham Hotspur have been active in the January transfer window following a difficult start to their Premier League campaign under Thomas Frank.
In terms of domestic form, Spurs have mirrored the struggles seen last season under Ange Postecoglou and currently sit 14th in the table, just eight points clear of the relegation zone.
The former Brentford boss is under pressure to improve the situation over the remainder of the campaign, although a comfortable qualification in the Champions League earlier this week should help his case.
Tottenham finished fourth in the Champions League table, meaning they will progress directly to the round of 16 without the added burden of extra play-off fixtures congesting an already busy schedule.
Conor Gallagher and Souza are the latest additions to the squad this month, but it has been widely reported that the club remain keen to add a new winger before the transfer window closes on Monday.
The North London side have been linked with several wide forwards, including Raheem Sterling and Victor Munoz, but fresh reports suggest they may now have turned their attention towards the Bundesliga.
According to BILD, Tottenham are considering a move for Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry.
The German publication claims Spurs have made contact to enquire about the availability of the talented winger, although no potential fee has been discussed at this stage.
There is no doubt that Gnabry would represent the kind of statement signing Spurs supporters have been calling for, but the likelihood of Bayern Munich parting ways with the winger appears slim.
The 30-year-old is keen to remain with the German champions and is currently in negotiations over a new contract to extend his stay at the club.
As a result, this is not one for Spurs fans to get overly excited about, although the impact of securing such a deal would be significant in their efforts to turn the season around.
Like Sterling, Gnabry – once hailed as “world-class” by Rio Ferdinand – would bring elite experience both domestically and in Europe, while also injecting a much-needed winning mentality into the dressing room.
However, at 30 years old, he would not represent a long-term solution for Tottenham’s forward line and would be viewed more as a short-term fix than a player to build the future of the team around.
While Gnabry’s quality and experience could provide an immediate uplift during a turbulent campaign, the reality is that such a signing would likely be a large investment for short-term return.
With pressure mounting on Frank and improvement desperately needed in the Premier League, ENIC must decide whether short-term impact outweighs futureproofing, or whether this window should be about stabilising the present without jeopardising the future.
