Spurs are set to continue their search for a new attacker into the final days of the January transfer window, with the Lilywhites reportedly enquiring about a striker looking for minutes.
Tottenham have been bereft of joy as far as the Premier League is concerned, with their most recent top-flight victory coming at Crystal Palace on 28th December.
Since then, they have sunk from 11th place in the table to 14th, picking up three draws and two defeats, with some of their opponents including bottom-three occupants Burnley and West Ham United.
Another aspect of their shortcomings this term has been their lack of attacking threat, as although Richarlison leads their scoring charts with seven goals, he has not scored since December’s defeat to Liverpool, while he is followed by centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven on four goals apiece.
It would therefore be no surprise to see Thomas Frank dive back into the transfer market to source a top-class goal-getter before Monday’s 7pm deadline.
According to TEAMtalk, Spurs have been one of the clubs to actively seek information on the availability of Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee.
Tottenham’s potential rivals when it comes to securing Zirkzee’s services are Crystal Palace, who could be about to lose star striker Jean-Philippe Mateta (another Spurs target), as well as Italian Serie A duo Juventus and Roma.
The report appears to suggest that despite United’s desire to retain Zirkzee ahead of the 2nd February deadline, the player’s desire for game time could change things, with Spurs ‘prepared to act quickly’ if an opportunity arises.
Zirkzee has started just four games all season and amassed a miserly 482 minutes – less than five and a half matches’ worth.
And with a World Cup fast approaching, you could understand if the Dutchman became rather desperate for more opportunities on the pitch.
He hasn’t turned out for the Netherlands since November 2024, though he did make their Euro 2024 squad thanks to his fine performances throughout 2023/24, when he scored a career-best 11 league goals for a Bologna side that constantly punched above their weight.
With just five in total for Man Utd thus far, a move may not be the worst idea in the world.
But if Spurs were looking for someone with a proven track record, Zirkzee’s is not exactly one that would lead to much excitement in N17.
You would have to hope that Frank’s tactics are more of a fit than Ruben Amorim’s or Erik ten Hag’s, which would finally see Zirkzee flourish in the Premier League.
However, Spurs have often played with a similar setup to Ten Hag’s at United, so with their existing forwards hardly firing, they may have some persuading to do if they are to lure Zirkzee to north London.
