Spurs could be looking to replace current No 1 goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as two goalkeepers have been strongly linked with the club ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.
January has been a month of soul-searching for the north Londoners, with Thomas Frank’s side winless in the league since the turn of the year amid a busy transfer window.
Conor Gallagher and Souza have joined the Lilywhites, with Brennan Johnson heading out the exit door.
With less than a week of the window remaining, it doesn’t seem as though Spurs are satisfied yet – and recent reports suggest there could yet be a significant first-team shake-up to come.
Spurs have recently been linked with a swap deal involving West Ham United goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.
Hermansen was part of the Leicester City side that went down last term, but has not been able to work his way into the Hammers first team on a regular basis, with Alphonse Areola holding on to the No 1 jersey.
He would move across London at the same time as Antonin Kinsky, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side thought to be close to a loan deal with an option to buy for the Czech shot-stopper.
However, other reports suggest that Hermansen could be being targeted by Spurs as a new No 1, as another target has emerged as a backup goalkeeper.
According to reporter Alan Nixon (via TEAMtalk), Spurs are eyeing a £10m deal for Sam Johnstone, who would “jump at the chance” to join Spurs despite already playing second fiddle to Jose Sa at seemingly doomed Wolves.
Nixon also claimed that talks over Johnstone come as a result of Kinsky’s possible departure to West Ham.
Meanwhile, TEAMtalk has claimed that the trail on Hermansen may have gone cold, which means there may yet be a Spurs future for Vicario regardless of any goalkeeping changes in the coming week.
But if Spurs were keen to make a change, the Italian could have few complaints.
Vicario has long been criticised for his lack of command in the Tottenham net, particularly at corners, where opposition players have invariably bullied him.
He has also been prone to errors, perhaps most notably against Fulham when Harry Wilson was gifted the chance to shoot into an empty net during the clubs’ meeting back in November.
The 29-year-old also came in for pelters after being at fault for one of Nottingham Forest’s three goals during an away-day drubbing at the City Ground.
You wonder whether Hermansen and Johnstone are the answers given that they don’t often start for their respective clubs, but with Inter reportedly sniffing around Vicario, perhaps Spurs see an opportunity for a fresh start at the back to help mend their defensive woes.
