Tottenham Hotspur’s internal pressure has intensified after manager Thomas Frank once again excluded Mathys Tel from the club’s UEFA Champions League squad list, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The decision, already a controversial talking, has now escalated tensions inside the camp, with the young French forward and his representatives said to be deeply unhappy about being left out for the second time.
Frank needed to free up a squad slot to register new signing Dominic Solanke, whose arrival has been fast-tracked into Tottenham’s European campaign.
UEFA squad restrictions meant only one name could realistically be removed, and Frank opted to unlist Tel, a move that has shocked many given the 20-year-old’s reputation as one of the brightest young attacking talents in Europe.
Solanke is expected to play a major role in the knockout rounds. Frank believes his physicality, Premier League experience, and immediate readiness make him essential to the squad’s continental ambitions.
The decision has not gone down well in the Tel camp. Tel and his representatives are “not happy at all” with Frank’s choice, especially given the player’s choice for more minutes, his impressive performances in limited minutes and growing interest from other European clubs.
There is mounting concern that Tel, who joined Spurs with promises of long-term development and involvement, may begin to question his future in North London if he continues to be sidelined for key competitions.
Frank’s handling of the squad has already drawn criticism during a season marked by inconsistency, underperformance, and a lack of clear tactical identity.
Tottenham sit worryingly low in the Premier League table, and fans have grown frustrated by mixed messages, questionable team selections, and the stalled development of several young players.
With Champions League fixtures looming and Tottenham desperate to salvage their season, Frank’s gamble on Solanke over Tel will be scrutinised heavily.
