Newcastle in talks for “exceptional” Serie A star

Newcastle United had a stressful summer transfer window with lots of unfinished business, but are yet to make a move this January.

The Magpies lost their talisman in a month-long ordeal that saw them concede defeat to Liverpool, agreeing a £130m deal to part ways with Alexander Isak on Deadline Day.

This season, Eddie Howe has been navigating a new chapter and a tactical overhaul as his squad adapts, which has led to inconsistent performances throughout the first half of the campaign.

Newcastle are currently sixth in the Premier League table after 21 games and have a great chance of qualifying for the next round of the Champions League over the coming weeks, so there is plenty to be positive about.

The arrivals of Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw have been the most impactful additions over the last few months, though there is room for improvement to ensure comfortable qualification for European competition.

Newcastle’s midfield has been one of their most praised assets under Howe, with Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali becoming an untouchable trio for the most part.

The likes of Joe Willock and Lewis Miley have struggled for consistent game time given the trust Howe has placed in his preferred midfield, but a transition period could be upon them.

Joelinton has not been at his best this season and has suffered multiple injuries over the last 12 months, which has seen him sidelined for spells.

New reports suggest that there may be an opportunity for Howe to take advantage of a deal this month that would allow him to bolster his midfield options.

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are in talks over a potential loan move to sign AC Milan ace Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The publication claims that the former Chelsea star is looking for a new challenge after falling down the pecking order in Italy, with seven Premier League clubs interested in making that happen.

Manchester United, Aston Villa, Fulham, Sunderland, Brentford and Everton have all been made aware of Loftus-Cheek’s availability, alongside Newcastle.

Intermediaries are said to be open to a loan move for the midfielder, which could appeal to clubs seeking a relatively risk-free option over the final six months of the season.

There is no doubt that there are other areas of the squad that need addressing in the long term, but the opportunity to loan Loftus-Cheek could prove advantageous.

After being knocked out of the Carabao Cup, Newcastle need to place a strong focus on the FA Cup and Champions League progression in the coming weeks and months.

Midfield options are already plentiful on Tyneside, with Lewis Miley, Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey all capable of rotating into the side in place of Joelinton, which makes a move for Loftus-Cheek appear unlikely.

That said, Willock’s future at Newcastle remains uncertain, with reports suggesting Crystal Palace and Leeds United are interested in snapping up his services this month.

As a result, Newcastle could be preparing to cash in on their midfielder, and any interest in Loftus-Cheek may be driven by the need for a short-term solution to ensure sufficient depth and experience in midfield for the remainder of the season.

The 29-year-old, once hailed as “exceptional” by Burnley boss Scott Parker, boasts a wealth of Premier League experience and the versatility to operate across multiple midfield roles, with his most notable spell at Chelsea registering 155 appearances and 31 goal contributions at Stamford Bridge.

With that being said, while a long-term move for Loftus-Cheek may be unlikely, he could provide the experience needed to offer reliable and versatile depth at Howe’s disposal during a season-defining schedule.
